Shadow Shot Sunday in the Attic
I rarely go up there. It's freezing in the winter and like an oven in the summer. That's if we get summer.
I took these photos when there was a little glitch of sunshine - just enough to capture shadows on the wall
A corridor leads off from the main stair case into a little room we call 'the priest hole' . It's only about four feet square.
It's quite strange with a caggle of letters which look as though someone has attempted to leave a cryptic message on the ceiling - or is it just a trail of smoke from a long burned out candle. I don't usually stop there too long to find out.
Linking up with Shadow Shot Sunday 2. Hope you've had a great weekend.

Molly that writing gave me a shiver right up the spine x
ReplyDeleteI know. I've often wondered about it, myself.
DeleteThose marks definitely look like they were made with a purpose in mind.....
ReplyDeleteYes they do look like formed letters - I've no idea how old they are.
DeleteYes - please give us some better photos of the priest hole smutty writing, and we'll do our best to decipher it (or scare the crap out of you).
ReplyDeleteOK, we'll try and take some more photos. To be honest, there is a fair bit of accumulation in there. You have to sort of crouch down to take a photo of the ceiling and hope something doesn't either crawl down the back of your neck or bite your backside - that's what I find most scary.
DeleteThose letters may be a Ragged Society speciality. A great mystery to be solved.
ReplyDeleteI know - but I don't know where to start.
DeleteCan only imagine how many terrified souls hid in that little hidey-hole Molly...if only the wall could talk eh?
ReplyDeleteBy my reckoning, you and hubby should be just about done..how's he doing?
Yes, the house was built around 1764 according a wall plaque outside, it does seem to have a chequered past, so who knows. J - we have just tomorrow and Wednesday to go and then completed. After that, a blood test and CT scan and then see the consultant again in about 4 weeks time. Hope R is doing well and you of course x
DeleteI love the shadow show! The shadows really seem to have a life of their own. http://www.looseleafnotes.com/2013/01/snowblower/
ReplyDeleteLove the shadow shots and the catch on that door to the priest hole.
ReplyDeleteand the old barn in your header photo.
ReplyDeleteWe have planning permission on it to turn it into a holiday cottage, but now I think I like it just as it is. So many of these old buildings are sometimes ruined instead of improved
DeleteYes I like that old barn too - it's on out Mill field
DeleteThat writing is definitely not a smoke trail. I'm quite curious as to what it might be. Could you research it at your city library? Maybe it is an ancient almost forgotten language like Aramaic.
ReplyDeleteMe too. Some of the letters stand out but none of it seems to make any sense.
DeleteIt was worth the trip up to the attic for those shadow shots! How high is the ceiling of 'the priest hole'?
ReplyDeleteYou can hardly stand upright in it and there's a wooden bench sort of thing against one wall - its very dusty up there.
DeleteI love the shadow pictures -- and the mysterious symbols/writing are worthy of further investigation...
ReplyDeleteSuch beauty to be found in the shadows...
ReplyDeleteNow that looks like a proper attic, Molly. I love the shadow photos, but even more the one of the dusty old latch. Super!
ReplyDeleteI think that must be the original one with the house - oh and the dust - tell me about it :)
DeleteWe live in a (much altered) house about the same age as yours, Molly and the dust is impossible to eradicate. Sigh....
Deletehow fun to have a secret little room! Know any stories about it? love your shadow pictures!
ReplyDeleteWe discovered a bit about the house when we bought it.It was part of the Powis Estates. A wealthy family owned it along with a few other properties until they were all lost in a gambling disaster - all for a bad hand of cards or a throw of the dice - you can't imagine it, can you.
ReplyDeletehiya- thankyou for your sweet "thankyou"!
ReplyDeleteI love the photos of your attic. In fact I love your attic...just the kinda place Grace Poole would live, and like the attics that always inhabit (or inhibit?!) your imagination!
Hope you're having a good week
x
I have shivers going up my spine. Lovely, atmospheric post.
ReplyDeleteWhat an an interesting attic! It would be good to do a bit more research if you have time. In the meantime, one can imagine all sorts of stories about that little nook. Attics and cellars have a certain atmosphere where I wouldn't linger, but your shadow photos are great fun.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. Is your house an old house?
ReplyDeleteThere's a plaque on the front of it which says 1764. We had a surveyor round a couple of years or so ago and he said that the older part of the house was, he thought built around the 1400's. It is very work intensive and would probably take an arm and a leg to restore it. Whoever has it after us - my dream is that it will be restored to it's former glory. It's so sad when these old buildings are lost.
DeleteIs that romano-cymeriac script do ye think ? :)
ReplyDeleteNot a clue :)
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued by your attic Molly - it looks like a great place to hang out, in spite of heat and cold. so on the way to the attic there's a little priest hole room? there's a whole lot of history there, and mystery too. don't you just want to unearth whatever you can find out about it? Love your new header photo too. your place if filled with charm; a good portion of it coming from you Molly. happy week to you.
ReplyDeletegosh darn it. I wish I would learn to proof-read before clicking. I meant "is" not "if" when referring to your place being filled with charm. but you knew what I meant, right? :)
ReplyDeleteGosh, darn it, Becky, I definitely think you got it right the first time with 'if' :) my house is very lived in and very often a bit mucky, but I do love it here. Have a good week x
ReplyDeleteHello Molly, a rare catch up x That byre on your header looks like it has so much character, and so does your attic!!
ReplyDeleteOoh, spooky!
ReplyDeleteLove the shadow photos!
That door and the scribblings are both creepy, yet mysterious. The shadow pictures are wonderful. You have a gift!
ReplyDeletelove the shadow shots and your commentary for your pictures...thanks for stopping by and always leaving part of your heart song.
