Minus Five
Minus five that's what the temperature was here during the night. Usually when you stand in the garden you can turn four points and see mountains and hills all around on every side. Not this morning though - couldn't even see the 'Moel-y', just one all consuming blanket of fog. Not that I minded too much, after all, you can't really have winter without a bit of winter and when you think what 2010/2011 was like .... well - You can hardly compare this to what we had last year. The child in me crunched figure eights across the frozen grass and delighted in the silver hard packed footsteps I left behind. And everywhere there were hoar encrusted spiders' webs. They don't care where they build.
Across the wing mirror on the old Red Transit
Clinging to the frozen handle of the redundant lawn mower under the bay tree.
A safety net maybe on the (not yet) flowering cherry.
I wonder why they build them this time of year. it's not as if they're going to catch many flies
And all the lifeless seed heads with crowns of silver.
Winter's not all bad, is it?

Once frosted, those webs look like corchet doilies.
ReplyDeleteThey do, don't they. they're so beautiful and intricate especially with the frost on them
DeleteI hope you don't forget this year, to lag that water tank in the roof. :O
ReplyDeleteTake care - and keep warm.
Cheers....Bernard
the memories of my bare arm immersed up to my shoulder trying to thaw out the pipe from the water tank in the attic are still pretty vivid so hopes I don't have to do it again this year. Covered the tanks last year but it went down to minus 18 so couldn't win. Bernard - you and Wes keep snug too
DeleteMolly - it does all look wonderful - especially from the pleasant warmth we have here today - 20 degrees rising to 22 with some cloud. It would be great to crunch through some snow or frost before going inside to a nice warming bowl of soup!!!
ReplyDeleteSue, I've been meaning to email you. Your weather sounds hot and lovely. I must admit the log fire I had roaring away today was very welcoming.
ReplyDeleteIt takes a beautiful eye to see the greatness in such simple things. You captured them perfectly.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos Molly. Interesting that you mentioned roses in your last post. Last summer I moved a patio rose from front ot back garden, not holding out much hope for it's survival. Yesterday I noticed lots of tiny new growth.
ReplyDeleteWe had thick fog this morning, I couldnt even see the Tor.
Oh Molly!!! the spider webs are such a wonderful notice and capture. you've a trained eye for seeing that sort of thing. don't you just love hoar frost? I don't see much of it here in the city. or else I rise too late! I think it turns the landscape into a magical place. just look what you found. winter has finally arrived here, and with the snow came the cold. but it isn't such a bad thing to experience the reality of winter now and then. it keeps it real. happy weekend to you dear.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great web image. Please loan me the will to strip wallpaper. I need to do that so badly. I never want to feel minus five.
ReplyDeleteThat is one good reason not to destroy spiders' webs, to leave old machinery in a corner somewhere and not to chop the seedheads off before spring: only that way can you produce marvellous photos like these.
ReplyDeleteMolly, you are an artist with your camera.

Winter is beautiful Molly...time to turn inwards and restore roots. Fog is marvelous!
ReplyDeleteBrrr, that sounds awfully chilly to me. And those spiderwebs truly are works of art, you captured them beautifully!
ReplyDeleteKat :)
Mostly frost brings us sunshine, but recently we've had fog all day like you. Keep warm.
ReplyDeleteFreezing again today Molly! Thanks for braving the cold and sharing those pics.
ReplyDeleteHello Molly - Thankfully I can comment on your blog - some blogs I am not able to - I love your teasels in your header pic and those spider webs are pretty - we didn.t get any fog - only a bit of mist - keep warm you two Janexx
ReplyDeleteIt looks so pretty.
ReplyDeleteLove your comments. thank you so much. Have given up on the reply/delete button it's a pain which keeps freezing as well
ReplyDeleteI do think one of the beauties of winter are hoar frosts, those silver seed heads are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI must say I prefer a white winterland like the one we had last year to the damp and greyness of this January, but how lucky you are to have a rose blooming in January!
It's good to be back Molly!
Jeanne

you have a good eye
