Broken Wings

It seems we weren't the only ones down at the Doc's this morning. The car park was pretty near full and the surgery likewise. When we came out we noticed him hobbling a bit painfully between the cars. He certainly didn't look under fed. The pheasant shooting season is practically here. Don't get me wrong I'm not vegetarian and like eating roast pheasant as much as anybody. It's just that I hate them being maimed to die a slow agonising death.

'Ow ....ouch...'
I don't know how his wing got broken - perhaps he was hit by a vehicle - perhaps a stray bullet ricocheted and caught his wing? At least you could say he was in the right place. He looked tame and folks coming and going didn't seem to bother him too much. Not many of us could eat our pet so hopefully he'll be able to live the rest of his life in relative safety. He was beautiful and I sort of hoped he didn't end up on someone's dinner table. I'm willing him to survive. I looked up and the nurse and receptionist were watching me watching him through the window. Perhaps they were thinking the same thing that I was.

  10. That's so sad Molly. Fingers crossed he'll be ok.

I don't know how easy it is to set a birds wing but I'd give it a go.

Catching the little fellow first would be another matter though...

  11. Trouble is Molly - how many more are not killed cleanly in the shooting season? maybe his injuries were the result of a road accident - either way he was probably doomed to die - sorry Molly to be so gloomy!

  12. Pheasants are amazingly strong. I tried to pick one up that had been hit by the car in front. I found it almost impossible to tuck his wings in, to gather him up without further injury.

  13. Oh my, is there a wildlife agency you could call? Many times the ones around here will take in injured animals/birds and nurse them back. I'd phone one but would be quite a drive to Wales.

    Call John.

  14. great header photo Molly. I hope the pheasant gets treatment for whatever ails him. I've never had pheasant, but I've seen plenty of them road-killed and I don't like it. his colors are gorgeous. happy day to you Molly.

  15. During hunting season, things should be on a level playing field. So hopefully Mr. Pheasant will have the sense to stick close to the Doc's. Enjoyed visiting with you. Do drop by for a visit.

  16. And you didn't call the vet?

funny lot we are. I know just how you felt. They are so much less like an animal or bird on the dinner table.
