Confused, beggared and bewildered

Google is making a whole lot of changes with Google reader apparently disappearing off the face of the earth. Now, I for one like Google reader and have all my favourite blogs (bloggers) listed there - easy to access - easy to read.
I came across a site called www.google.com/takeout
Up to 15th July, they're giving us the option of copying our own sites to hard disk - have a look, see what you think. Anyway, followed the instructions, spent over an hour downloading the bits I wanted to keep. Oh all right maybe my computer isn't the fastest thing on two gigabytes, but I like it. Got them downloaded and then bingo - can't open the files. Did it all over again - no joy. I filled in the survey and told them that as far as I was concerned it was as useful as a chocolate teapot.
Trying out the bloglovin thing. Still not a clue what I'm doing - any help would be so much appreciated.

  1. I have the bloglvin button on my sidebar but I essentially go by my blogroll. Change is constant on the blogs.

  2. Molly, I wish I could tell you..anything. I've always used blogger dashboard and the blogs I follow show up in chronological posting order. If dashboard goes, I will have to shoot myself in the foot.

  3. Hi Molly - I do the same as Joanne.

  4. Can you tell me is Belling considered a good brand of stove/oven in the U.K. -- I see they are still made there. Looking at replacing my ageing model.

    1. BELLING??? Didn't they make those dreadful 'Baby Bellings' that we all had in our London Bed-sits?

  5. Like Joanne and Susan, I use the dashboard.

I can't handle technological change. I would imagine, Molly, that right now after this, you will need an aspirin or a fine glass of wine - or both.

  6. I'm staying with the dashboard system too. Too much change makes my head hurt.

Better the devil you know... etc

  7. I, too, use the dashboard. It occasionally goes a little crazy, or doesn't update - but it sorts itself out eventually. My computer is so temperamental that I don't want to have to download and install anything else, lest it upset the delicate balance of the elastic bands and chewing gum which hold it all together.

  8. I’m lost! I haven’t a clue what these are.
Thousands and thousands of computer users are getting older and older every year, and more and more of us want less and less, but the geeks insist on cramming more and more gizmos and gagets into Windows, Google etc. etc.
I’ve had enough problems with Vista and now Windows 8. I wish they would get round to releasing a version of Windows named "The Good Old Days".
Why can’t they just KISS - keep it simple, strip out all the sophisticated stuff aimed at dextrous 8-year olds, and make all us silver serfs very happy?
Good luck Molly, with whatever it is?

    1. Still keep reading my Google reader, cos that's the one I much prefer. I do agree with you - I wish somebody out there would listen. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

  9. I'm staying away from bloglovn'. I want to keep it as simple as possible. I also use my dashboard.

  10. Molly, Google Reader had been scheduled for closure since March, and, to be fair to them, they kept warning us of the fact, but I was still sorry to see it finally disappear. Before it went I had opened accounts with no fewer than 3 alternative readers, on the belt-and-braces principle, and imported my Google Reader list into them.

One is Bloglovin and the other two are The Old Reader: http://theoldreader.com/ (which strongly resembles Google Reader) and the other is Feedly: http://feedly.com.

Having registered with each of these when Google Reader was still in existence, I can't advise in detail on how to get your Blogger reading list onto any of them, but I'm sure there are specific instructions for new members. (If all else fails, you can certainly open an account with Feedly and then add the blogs from your dashboard reading list one by one.)

If you want to contact me off your blog, there's a contact button in my profile. Good luck.

  11. Well luckily our Blogger dashboard has not been affected so luckily the Google reader shutdown didn't affect that! I did add a Bloglovin link though just incase it ever goes down and I migrated the blogs I follow over to Bloglovin as well just to be on the safe side.

  14. don’t know about Google, but bloglovin sends you daily updates. They’re good.

I’ve always used the blogger dashboard updates and I also have all comments sent my email.
I only miss what I want to miss.
