The Ace of Spades

The sun shone a bit today. Actually it wan't too bad out at all. After days of battling through the floods and the quagmire, unblocking clogged up grids and attempting to tame a rampant brook we really felt like getting out and going somewhere. We went down to 'Coed-y-dinas' Agricultural Store just on the edge of Welshpool. All the Christmas glitz and the New Year celebrations well and truly packed away and the spades, forks, bags of compost, arrays of seed packets and chicken coops all there to tempt you to spend the last of your hard earned cash. Don't you feel so much better when the sun shines! Along with bags of coal for the Rayburn and a cylinder of gas for the Super Ser, I bought a huge bargain bag of daffodils for £2 - yeah, I know, they should have been planted last September/October, but £2 - two pounds  - too cheap to leave there for that. I shall be planting bulbs in the mud tomorrow if it doesn't rain again.
D'you like that great big shovel they'd got outside the entrance?   All I need now is to find the great big man to go with it and we'll get back on an even keel in no time at all.

    1. John, that's not on - sending you a bit of sun from here, only a bit mind, cos we haven't seen much of it today either.

  4. Here in San Diego, we are expecting a drought. No rain since November, high temperatures. No winter.

    I envy those daffodils.

    1. Susan, I can't imagine a drought - the weather seems to have gone haywire this year. The daffodils in my header were from last year. I'm hoping the ones that I've just planted will do as well. The bulbs do seem healthy and I'm wishing now that I'd bought more of them.

  5. I heard recently that it is OK to plant bulbs in the winter. Let us know in the spring if they work.

I want one of those big strong men also, not for anything in particular, but a little eye candy can help the winter be more pleasant.

    1. The bulbs looked quite good - only one of them had gone a bit withered and had to be thrown out so here's hoping. Eye Candy helps the winter along

  7. UK style garden forks and spades are unheard of here (they use clumsy long straight handled things), so just yesterday I ordered a set for my son to bring over. I hope they're not quite as big as that one; although I'd love it as an 'object'.

    1. We've got a whole load of forks and spades which O/H has picked up over the years from car boot sales - none anywhere as near as big as that one though - it is a bit eye catching isn't it!

  9. Perfect weather for going to the garden center. Uplifting to the soul and the pocket book. I'm no expert, but I'd sure be planting those bulbs, too. Like everything, they will do their utmost to live and please.

    1. It is reasonably mild here. We've not had all that horrible frost and snow that you've endured so hoping they might be in with a chance.

  10. I take it you were out planting bulbs today then?
A gorgeous day round here. Lots of sunshine.

Perhaps I need to go and check out garden stuff too.

  11. Hasn't it been great out today! I planted my bulbs yesterday and I was wishing I'd bought more - there was only one bad one in them.

  12. I looked and looked and finally enlarged the picture before I saw the big spade! It's a beauty.
It is lovely when the sun comes out again after so much cold.
I hope the daffodils do well.

    1. Thank you for both your comments River. Glad you enjoyed listening to Charlie Landsborough - got to admit, I'm a bit of a fan myself (as if no-one would ever guess)

  14. You can always count on bargains at Charlies, Molly. :-) DH got a couple of proper coal scuttles in the Newtown branch recently and they were amazingly reasonable and well-made. He didn't spot any daffs, though. :-( i do hope yours do well.
